The mechanism of the free radicals' action

The free radicals attack directly the most fragile molecules of our organisms: the membrane phospholipids. The exterior of our body is the first to be attacked by this aggression: the skin and, at a certain age, the eyes.

The above diagramme represents the action of the free radicals on the plasmic membrane of a cell:

  • The free radical enters into contact with membrane phospholipids
  • The membrane become fragile and disintegrates
  • The content of the cell runs out into the intercellular environment
  • The cell loses its shape and its initial function
  • The cell dies, which makes the entire tissue fragile
  • When the cell does not die, the pores formed in the plasmic membrane allow toxic substances to enter which lead to its disfunctioning
